Morning Announcements – Did you know…

2 Mar

It’s Friday Cambridge!

Did you know it’s fifteen days til St. Patrick’s Day?  St. Patrick’s Day honours the feast day of Saint Patrick.  People commemorate this day by attending parades, wearing shamrocks, and also wearing green.

Did you know that according to early Roman calendar that March used to be the first month of the year?  Well, later on they changed the beginning of the year to January 1st.  Some other interesting fact are that March has always had 31 days and March honours the Roman god Mars, the god of War.

Due to the teacher strike there will be no school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

The library monitors today are Jenna and Mya.

A message to all teachers – there will be an STA meeting in the library today at noon.

There will be a Fizzical Fizzicks presentation at 9 am in the gym.  We will call you down when we are ready for you.

Parents – Here’s what else you’ll want to know -

Congratulations to Subscriber Rewards Performance Lottery winners, Amy & Lisa.  They each won a seat for themselves and a guest at this morning’s physics presentation.

Surrey Schools strike notice went home yesterday with details of the cancellation of classes.  Parents are asked to find alternative care arrangements for their children during the strike.  If you missed the notice, you can pick one up in the office or find the info on the school district website www.sd36.bc.ca

Walk & Talk Community walk-to-school event notice is going home with students today.  The Walk and Talk is an opportunity for our Cambridge community (parents, students, neighbours) to walk/bike/scoot to school alongside the City of Surrey Transportation employees and alert them of any potential problems or dangers that hinder the walk (no sidewalks, dog off leash, drug house, narrow street, etc).  The Walk takes place the morning of Friday, March 9th.  Most walks start around 8 am with a goal to arrive at the school at 8:30.  The notice outlines the meeting points for the start of each route.  Huge thanks to Tammy for all her hard work with the city to keep this program rolling!

Thanks Cambridge!

Morning Announcements – National Pig Day and PYC

1 Mar

Happy March 1st Cambridge!

Please get ready for your morning announcements.

Did you know that today is National Pig Day in the United States?  Pig as in oink, oink.

Now here is the rest of the morning announcements.

Teachers – the computer server was down but now restored.  You may have to log-off and log back in.  Also, turn your printer off and back on to reconnect.

You will be called down in about 2 minutes for the assembly.

Here’s an update to our House Team Points!  It’s a close race with less than 100 points between the teams.  Green Team has 994 points.  Yellow Team has 1001 points.  Red Team has 1069 points.  Red Team gained the most points for being Cambridge Stars!  Great job, Reds!  Blue Team remains in the lead with 1089 points.

Parents – here’s what else you’ll want to know -

Grade 7′s had a visit from Sullivan Heights High School Counsellors today to help with their course planning.

Congratulations to Selina, our February Subscriber Rewards Winner!  Selina has won a $10 gift card to Starbucks so she can enjoy her blog posts as she savours one of their new Blonde Roast coffees!

Congratulations to Subscriber Rewards Performance Lottery winners April, Neeraj, and Robin!   They each enjoyed seating for them and a guest at this morning’s performance by the Panorama School of Dance and their PYC dancers (Panorama Youth Company).   Huge congratulations to Emma, Alexis, Kaitlyn and Brea who are members of PYC and students at Cambridge!   It took a tremendous amount of courage to perform in front of 700 of your closest school-mates!  The PYC group performed 11 dances around a Michael Jackson theme including solo performances by Emma and Brea and a duet with Kaitlyn.  The show ended with a “who wants to dance??” finale that included about 20 students from the audience learning and performing a hip hop routine and ended with a chance to “show me your stuff”!  Outstanding!   The students were invited to come check out the dance studio in person or visit their website www.panoramadance.com    Then it was out the door and off to 2 more schools to perform again.  In the words of one of the dancers as she left the gym….”that was fun”!   Huge thanks to our official photographer, Janice, for capturing the moment on film so we can all enjoy a look back at the year end slide show!

And the rewards never end…

Subscriber Rewards Fizzicks Presentation Lottery – The Fizzical Fizzicks (physics) presentation takes place at the school on Friday, March 2nd from 9 am – 11 am.  3 lucky parents will win a seat for them and a guest at the presentation!!!  If you’d like to enter the draw, email the PAC with your name and FIZZICKS in the subject line cambridgepacyac@shaw.ca    Draw will take place tonight.  Winners will receive a CONGRATULATIONS email from the PAC.  Check out their website for more info http://fizzicalfizzicks.com/

PAC President Message – Update on BCTF Job Action

1 Mar
A word from your PAC President -
It is School as Usual…….for now.
On Tuesday, Feb. 28th, Education Minister George Abbott announced that Bill 22-2012 was presented to the Legislature. The Bill, if passed, will restrict the Teachers Right to Strike.  According to local media, it may take one week from today to get the Bill passed in Government,  which it is expected to do.  During this next week there may be escalating Teacher Job Action.  While this is only speculation on my part, I feel we need to be prepared as a Parent body.
If there were to be a withdrawal of Teacher Services (so called walking off the job “on strike”) you would have advance warning through the media and then on School web sites.  Your best information source is to stay in touch with local media.   Advance warning may only be the day before it happens and that could potentially be any day now.
Get prepared, be prepared, stay involved.
