A message from your PAC President

30 Mar
Parents and Students
The cancellation of the annual April Running Club is a disappointment to many of us.  The reasons given from Cambridge Staff for the cancellation of Running Club are  1) Teacher Job Action  and 2) Lack of volunteers.  Please let me comment on this.
The prime reason for cancelling the Running Club is the Teacher Job Action.  The Teachers have withdrawn their involvement for the Running Club event and that decision has an impact on the Running Club.  The impact that the PAC executive has been dealing with is that we will need many more volunteers than any other year to help run this event.   The PAC Executive made a decision on Thursday morning that taking on this event was not possible based on the number of volunteers needed, the assuming of responsibilities for running a school program and the number of volunteers who indicated their availability.
Running Club is an all month event. Having enough volunteers is not just for one day but every day.  Many parents at Cambridge have been generous with their time and parents did indicate their willingness to help with Running Club on the permission form sent home in late February.  Last April`s Running Club saw the number of volunteers dwindle rapidly over the weeks and few parents were left to shoulder all the work everyday.  This is not acceptable.
A suggestion was made to perhaps only hold Running Club certain days of the week – the same concern is present in terms of having enough volunteers.  I have tried to explain the number of volunteers need to run the event below.
Teachers have been legislated back to, once again, supervising the 15 minutes after the 2:40 school bell but that does not involve Running Club which goes for 30 minutes.  There is a mandatory level of supervision that is required for such an event that in previous years was done by the teachers.  We would need one person in charge of the entire event so they could organize information and schedule volunteers.  We need guaranteed set up and take down of the course each day; supervisors in hi-vis vests along the course for safety and supervision. Parents signing booklets and issuing ribbons.  We would also need to guarantee a first aid person present and available on all running club days.
What is next? The BCTF/STA School Union Representative at Cambridge is Ms. Neovi Patsicakis patsicakis_n@sd36.bc.ca.  My understanding from Ms. Patsicakis is that effective immediately teachers are completing any volunteer activities that they have started and will not be starting any new volunteer work.  Running Club was volunteer work for the teachers involved.  There is an important vote on April 16-18 for the Teachers.  Decisions will be made at that vote on what will happen next with the Job Action.  Parents are welcome to email or call Ms. Neovi Patsicakis directly. Cambridge Phone number 604-595-4036
The next Cambridge PAC meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 16th.  We are considering changing the date so that the results of the teachers voting will be known and Cambridge School Union Representatives can attend the meeting to explain the results.
Please plan to attend the PAC Meeting – stay tuned for the rescheduled date.

Learning to fail – I came across a brilliant blog post on this very subject earlier this week.  The post was centred around the quote “Do not handicap your children by making their lives easy.” by Robert A. Heinlein.  The wisdom the mom adds in her blog post is fantastic.  Check it out:

Stage set for walk out

7 Mar

Or should I say Walk To…

Our Cambridge Community Walk & Talk with the City of Surrey happens this Friday morning, March 9th. !

Tell your neighbours even if they don’t have school age students!  We want feedback from as many community members as possible.  Post it on your Facebook page.  Tweet about it.  Blog about it.  You’ll find a link to Tammy’s flyer and map that you can share below.  It includes start times and meeting spots.

The purpose of the walk is to highlight the positive aspects that people enjoy on their walk to school as well as to point out concerns that people might have that are their barriers to wanting to walk or cycle to school.

And if that isn’t enough of a draw…two words

FREE COFFEE!

We all enjoyed the coffee tent at the start of the year.  It’s back on Friday morning!  We’ll walk.  We’ll talk.  We’ll enjoy a coffee together.

Hope to see you on the route!

In case you missed it…

6 Mar

Our PAC President attended the Parents as Preventers Drug Awareness seminar at the Bell Centre on Feb. 28th.  In case you missed it, a few highlites from Lynda follow below.  The good news is that the Surrey School District seems to hold this seminar often so you may be able to catch it next round.

Lynda’s feedback -

Interesting point about “First Use’ scenarios (really high percent – 62%) will have a First Use experience between the grades of 8-12.  First Use is likely outside of school and in a social setting.  Its not that kids are different today its more that the opportunity is so much greater than when I was a kid because of the immediate access to drugs.
PS:  drugs means anything that you put in your body that alters your mind or body.
Question for you….Which drug is responsible for the most deaths in BC each year?
Tobacco and then alcohol – together they make up 98%.  The last 2% is illicit drugs.
Interesting concept that use of tobacco (which is considered abuse) and abuse of alcohol are considered Gateways to other drugs.  Number one drug that kids will try is marijuana….for many reasons but one of the main reasons is that our society has normalized it to the point where we actually may teach our kids that it is the lesser of all evils, doesn’t really harm and everyone is doing it.
Want more information?
The Government of Canada has a brilliant website focussed on the National Anti-Drug Strategy.  Health Canada has developed a free Tool Kit to help parents, guardians and other caring adults talk with teens about drugs. You can order a free tool-kit or download the info from their site.

http://www.nationalantidrugstrategy.gc.ca/parents/get-obtenez.html

Yep…talking to kids about drugs is right up there with the awkward sex talk. Like we learned from the Saleema Noon organization, the best time to start talking to kids about sex and drugs is before they start!  Think the Drug strategy website says it best:

How your child will grow into adulthood is greatly influenced by your actions and words. Their behaviours, decisions, and filters are shaped at a very early age and clear and consistent communication between parent and child is critical to help them understand what’s expected of them. Keep talking, the most powerful tool you have with your teenagers is communication.

For what it’s worth…my pre-teen daughter freaked out when the free tool-kit arrived in the mail.  Oh yeah, baby!  Momma’s got a tool kit and is armed with knowledge.  Let’s talk!
